The Irish Invented Surfing!

not the father of surfing..?

not the father of surfing..?

The Irish did what..?

A very learned friend of mine assures me that it is not the Hawaiians nor the Australians who deserve the credit for inventing or discovering ‘surfing’ as we know it today, but rather the Irish!

Lets go back to before ‘the Duke’ (Duke Kahanamoku 1890-1968) the longstanding father of modern surfing, back to Captain Cook and 1775 where it was recorded in his journals that “…surfing was a matter of lying prone…” – perhaps a bit to far back then.

How about 1900 and “… George Freeth … born in 1883 of Irish and Hawaiian parentage … in 1900 at the age of 16 … taught himself to ride by standing up on the board instead of lying down.” – Nat Young, “The Complete History of Surfing” page 43.

So there you have it in black and white – the irish invented surfing!
