Literacy and Numeracy Are Unnecessary In The Modern World

Monday, March 24th, 2014

literacy-and-numeracy-are-unnecessary-in-the-modern-worldThe world has changed somewhat since the 1800’s…“, may seem a rather obvious statement to most people but alas not so for our education policy makers.

Education Policy both Nationally and Internationally, has primarily been based around Mathematics and Physical Science ever since the days of The Industrial Revolution.

Since time immortal, education has always been a way to better oneself (whether that means to be able to get a good job or to be able to move in ‘higher’ social circles) and that premise still continues today. However, as the world has changed so to must the associated ”education’ if it is to remain integral to self betterment.

Looking beyond Literacy and Numeracy, is only the beginning.

Buying Land On Tamborine Mountain

Saturday, August 3rd, 2013

Tamborine Mountain is a beautiful part of the world, nestled in the SE of Queensland, Australia and just inland from the hectic coast that is Surfers Paradise and the City of Gold Coast. Tired of the rat race, it seemed fitting that the family and I should sell up and move to Tamborine Mountain and experience a ‘different way of life ‘.

Buying Land On Tamborine MountainWe sold our house and decided to buy a piece of land on the Mountain and build a home.

Buying the land was easy and getting permission to build a house was easy BUT… where things came unstuck was sewerage. The Mountain does not have ‘town water’ nor does it have ‘mains sewerage’ which means harvesting your rain water for supply and putting in a OSSF (On Site Sewerage Facility) or HSTP (Household Sewerage Treatment Plant) to manage your effluent.

Australian Tax Return Deadline

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Today is the DAY… for your Australian Tax Return! – Or Is It..?

Tax Return DeadlineAustralian Tax Returns for Individuals are due at the end of each Australian financial year, that is June 30th to you and me.

The ATO (Australian Tax Office) gives us a few months to get it all together and submit it to them, so that takes us up to October 31st. After this date… to quote the ATO, “..penalties apply..”. Scary stuff!

So that makes today the day for the ATO deadline for Tax Return Submissions – right? Well not necessarily, and here’s why.

Tech Support for Women

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

very very exciting,

scaramouch…?

err, not exactly!

But close. Brainstorming is not as scientific or as organised as some might like to think.

Debits And Credits

Debit versus Credit

Now which one is it... Debit or Credit?

Contrary to popular belief and even some dictionary definitions, accounting debits and credits do not mean decrease and increase. The only constant definition of debits and credits is that debits are left-column entries and credits are right-column entries.

In fact, debits and credits each increase certain types of accounts and decrease others. In asset and expense type accounts, debits increase the balance and credits decrease the balance. In liability, equity and income type accounts, credits increase the balance and debits decrease the balance. Not confused yet, well read on?

Q.E.D. Is Q.E.D.

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

… or perhaps the title should read “QED for the QED QED”. Let me explain…

Queensland Education Department demonstrates its pig philosophy.

Q.E.D demonstrates its 'pig philosophy'

Q.E.D. is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase quod erat demonstrandum, which literally means “which was to be demonstrated”. The phrase is written in its abbreviated form at the end of a mathematical proof or philosophical argument to signify that the last statement deduced was the one to be demonstrated; the abbreviation thus signals the completion of the proof.

Q.E.D. is also the acronym for the Queensland Education Department, an Australian government institution created to manage the state educational system and infrastructure.

BUT

Q.E.D. could also stand for: question everything done as opposed to quite easily done as anyone dealing with the Education Department will attest to. How about quest for educational direction as opposed to quality education data . They spend more time deliberating about how to do it than actually doing it. Another good one is  quickly ends debate and not quick editorial decisions since the department is run as an autocracy. My personal favourite and the meaning of Q.E.D. in the title is quite evidently defunct and not quite easily done.

So the Queensland Education Department is Quite Evidently Defunct.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum.
