F1 – The Car or The Driver

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Formula 1

So… the big question all F1 fans want the answer too is:

Is it the car or is it the driver that determines who wins the race?

After listening to Sebastian Vetel’s comments after qualifying last week, and then comparing it to the measured response from his team mate Mark Webber, you begin to wonder…

$2000 …For A Perambulator

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

I recently had the very great pleasure of needing to look at and with the intention of buying…, a pram.

THAT PLEASURE QUICKLY TURNED TO PAIN..!pram

Just to clarify, a pram is that little device we use to push a baby around in, 4 wheels and a seat, perhaps a sunshade as an extra. I’m not talking about a motorised vehicle, no electronic device or controls, just a bunch of plastic and cloth and weighing in at about 13kg’s. A good old fashioned perambulator.

SO WHAT’S WITH THE ASTRONOMICAL PRICE TAG..?

Australian Petrol Prices

Australian Petrol Prices at the Bowser, 2006 to 2010

Well they say “a picture can tell a thousand words” and I guess this one is no exception.

The price of petrol as seen by me at my local petrol station down the road, from September 2006 until today (March 2010). The price per litre ranges from 86 cents to A$1.46 and everywhere in between. The biggest alarm bells are saved for the CREEP in the price… see how the price keeps on rising over the years with the only respite being October 2008 to January 2009 (right about when the Global Financial Crisis set in)!

What’s it going to take to get the price down next time…?

Slow Is Faster

Did you know…

Laminar and Turbulent Flow

Laminar versus Turbulent Flow

Smooth running water flows faster than rough, turbulent water!

Let me explain.

Take your ordinary garden hosepipe attached to the tap, turn on the tap and watch the water flow freely. Slowly increase the flow from the tap and correspondingly the flow from the end of the hosepipe increases until suddenly the water no longer flows freely but has become turbulent. At this point you will also observe that LESS water now flows from the hosepipe than before! Why?

Living With BSoD

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Aaargh..

Aaargh..

It’s not pretty… and it’s not nice… but for some of us, we just have to live with it.

Blue Screen of Death, otherwise known as BSoD, is a rather all to common occurrence with Windows based computers. But for some of us, its not just an occurrence but rather a regular event, something we can count on occurring at exactly the wrong time and as such have developed counter measures, strategies and contingency plans for when it occurs.

In essence, Windows decides things are getting a bit confusing and so shuts down ‘to prevent further damage’ without any notice or warning. This results in the total loss of any and all things open or not saved.

Architects + Engineers + Contractors

Monday, April 6th, 2009

An architect is said to be a man who knows very little about a great deal and keeps knowing less and less about more and more until he knows practically nothing about everything, whereas an engineer is a man who knows a great deal about very little and who goes along knowing more and more about less and less until finally he knows practically everything about nothing. A contractor starts out knowing practically everything about everything, but ends up by knowing nothing about anything, due to his association with architects and engineers.architect

Pulling up the Pile – Is it really that interesting or important?

vacum cleaner pulling up the pile

Its a simple enough thought or question and does not require much in the way of an answer, yet for some it can be a matter of ‘life and death’…
